The Shoah Project |
|
The Guildford Jewish Community is marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2005 by launching its Shoah Project.
This project will look at the Shoah (Holocaust) from a communal and very personal point of view.
Members of the community will be asked to contribute to this online project by placing on this site their personal testimonies, the history of their families during the Shoah or the fate of the cities, towns and shtetls that our families left to go to Britain.
This project will allow for the testimonies of Holocaust survivors living in the town to be placed side by side with family histories of younger members of the community.
In developing this project, it is hoped that we will be able to build an online memor book in order that future generations will never forget.
Holocaust Memorial Day Event
300 people attended the Guildford Holocaust Civic Commemoration held at the University of Surrey. The event focused on the testimonies of three survivors Mrs Mimi Conway, Mrs Barbara Frankiss and Mr Martin Bennet.
The three survivors gave their very different testimonies (which will appear on this site in due course).
David Williams, Chief Executive of Guildford Borough Council, Councillor Mrs Jennifer Powell and Professor Patrick Dowling, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey welcomed people to the evening. Dr Aryeh Nusbacher contextualised the history of the Shoah and Jewish Chaplain Alex Goldberg interviewed the survivors
The evening ended with Cantor Helen Leneman singing “El Male Rachamim” followed by civic and faith leaders lighting candles.
Amongst those lighting candles were survivors and their families representatives from local orthodox (Guildford and Kingston), Reform (North West Surrey) and Liberal communities, Jewish Society of the University, Romany Gypsy and Traveller Community of Surrey (Pastor to the community), the Diocese of Guildford (Bishop of Dorking), Guildford Cathedral (Dean of Guildford Cathedral), University of Surrey Chaplaincy, Catholic Community and Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, Christian Union Society of Surrey University, Buddhist Community of Guildford, Methodist Communities of Guildford, Muslim Community of Guildford, High Sheriff of Guildford, Guildford Borough Council executive, Guildford Borough Council Councillors, Surrey County Council and the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell.
